Weak run of Valley sockeyes is puzzle
WASILLA -- While Kenai Peninsula anglers revel in an unexpected bounty of sockeye salmon this year, an extremely low return left setnetters with one of their smallest harvests ever in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough.River anglers are almost exclusively limited to catch-and-release only.
Sockeye returns to the Mat-Su have been shrinking for years, but numbers this year were shockingly low. The Yentna River, the main measuring spot for Valley sockeye, saw its worst return since records started being kept in 1981.
Fewer than 37,000 reds, about a third of the minimum number biologists wanted to return to spawn to maximize future runs, made it back to the river this year, according to statistics kept by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. Only 1988, when a paltry 52,000 reds returned to the stream, comes close.
