Hallo Yukon Quest Fangemeinde

It seems that everything is quiet on the northern YQ front, but this is not so. Far from it... Three weeks ago, trail breakers continued to mark trails in our area from Fairbanks towards Two Rivers, Boulder and Rosebud, past Eagle Summit and into the valley towards Central. The short e-mail our crew received back then from the 'head trail breaker' Mike Reitz after a weekend of trail breaking during a cold spell said: "Had a nice weekend at 101. Trail is marked and packed from Chena Hotsprings Rd to Steese Highway north of Eagle Summit. -40 F (- 40C) something in the valleys, -15 F (- 34 C) and calm on Eagle Summit, nice..... " This rather short report does not mention the occasional overflow in the Birch Creek valley, or deep snow drifts on steep inclines that riders had to pound more than once to get through. The trail breakers rarely mention obstacles or engine problems. - This week, temperatures soared to 32 F or 0 C . Trail breakers are now marking the trail between Circle and Eagle, which mostly runs on the Yukon River ice. Information from locals in the area says, that the Yukon River is not frozen solid... or is thawing ... in several places. This puts trail breakers in a very dangerous situation. With the help of mushers , trappers and pilots in the area, they will have to slowly find and mark the safest route through sloughs and over the best river ice between Circle and Eagle. The Canadian Rangers usually break trail from Whitehorse to the alaskan border. They too will have to face questionable river ice, overflow and brush-blocked passages while staking the 1600 km / 1000 mile YQ trail towards the alaskan border. --- Here is our thanks to the trail breakers from both sides of this international sled dog race: Without your determination, your dedication, sheer guts, beating up your own machines in overflow and river ice - canadian or alaskan - there would be no trail for this race. Hats off to all you gals and guys. We salute you !

Checkpoint Mile OneO-One Update: Even so conditions are pretty warm around Fairbanks and icy road conditions prevail, food drops will be delivered to the checkpoints of Central, Cirlce and Mile 101 on Sunday. We have called Chatanika Lodge on 24 Mile Steese Highway past Pedro Dome today. Not only do they have excellent food, but they also always have the best local information on road conditions concerning the Steese Highway towards Central. Their information comes from people stopping for a coffee. They say that the road is drivable without too many problems. Now, ... what you call 'too many problems' differs between folks up there and folks in the city. You need to interpret this information yourself. Their phone number is: 1-907-389 - 2164. We also called DOT (Department of Transportation) in Fairbanks, a pretty handy number to have for handlers: 1-907-451-2205. You'll talk to - depending on the weather - a nice or a grumpy guy. In any case, he'll give you the straight story. In our case it was this: "Mile 101 ? The guys have been sanding the roads up there all day, but I don't have the complete afternoon 'Steese Highway report' yet, because they are still working." In a gruff voice he added after some thought: "Yeeah, you can make it to 101." The extra 'e' in the 'yeeah' meant, that you should be an experienced driver to try. --- We are really thankful to Huges Net, which will sponsor the YQ race with remote internet access again. It is amazing how well their dishes work in remote areas. Seriously...., no commercial involved here. We are glad that they came back to help with the race. To us at 101 that means a lot.
We'll keep you posted... gespeichert

Current Race Conditions Sunday, January 26, 2014 The warming trend over the last ten days has obviously had an impact on the trail conditions throughout Alaska and the Yukon. Most of us need only look to our back yard to see this. Consequently, our trail teams on both sides of the border have remained in the field for an extended time. I expect the Alaska team to be back in town by tomorrow night, Sunday the 26th. Expect a detailed report after that.
A few things to keep in mind for the coming week as the temperatures continue to fluctuate: -There have been absolutely no discussions to cancel or delay the race. Nor are any planned. The race will start on February 1st. -As conditions warrant, the start location could possibly be moved or modified. -As conditions warrant, the trail may be re-routed. This is nothing new and has happened several times over the years. We will give you as much prior notice as possible if this occurs. -Conditions are changing daily, we will adapt as necessary.
The organization is fully aware of the concerns all interested parties have regarding the rapidly changing conditions. It is difficult to remain patient in times like this, but please be assured that we are utilizing all of our assets to plan for any given contingencies.

Start & Finish Lines Moved for 2014 Yukon Quest
January 28, 2014 (Whitehorse, YT & Fairbanks, AK) – The start of the 2014 Yukon Quest 1,000 Mile International Sled Dog Race will be moved off of the Chena River in downtown Fairbanks to 2nd Avenue. The relocation is due to thinner ice than normal from last week’s warm temperatures, and concern for having 2-3,000 spectators on the ice. Historically, the race ran from 2nd Avenue down to the end and then went off the Chena River at the Nordale Bridge down Chena Hot Springs Road. Also, due to the unusually warm weather conditions in Yukon, the Finish Line of the 2014 Yukon Quest will be moved from downtown Whitehorse to the Takhini Hot Springs on the Hot Springs Road, off the North Klondike Highway. This is due to dangerous trail conditions for dog teams and mushers on the Yukon River. All other Yukon Quest events will happen as planned. Specific checkpoint details will be released once they are available. -30-
